Yusaku Crease Fly
2012, when Yusaku San from Osaka, Japan came for Malaysia International Fly Fishing Festival… he shared the concept of his popper in fused foam… all of us was amazed by the design.
Since then… I’ve been experimenting and trying to improve this pattern.. trying on different thickness of foam, hooks and weighing system..
This is an improved easier to tie version base on the 1st version tied with smaller hooks ( the right hook that I think… ) on a Ahrex TP610 Trout Predator streamer hook size 2 – 4…. the hook is heavy enough ( important for the weighing and balancing of the pattern ) with wide gap and I love the micro barb on Ahrex hook… it’s less damaging to fishes and easier to remove.
People may ask… will this going to be a repeat problem like the old version where I did mention the foam sometimes could causes less hook-up…?
YES… if you tie a big Yusaku Crease pattern… but this round, It’s tied on maximum size 2 hook… top water predator fish normally have a big mouth and most of the time it will swallow the whole popper or crease fly… so small Yusaku Crease fly with foam body of few cm… are often swallowed…..example: our Hampala Barb ( Sebarau ), Giant Snakehead ( Toman ) and so do Bass
So when you are tying a bigger version… try the articulated hook version ( Yusaku Crease Fly 2.0 )
Material List:
Foam body – Wild Wild foam 1.5mm thk
Hook – Ahrex TP610 size 2-4
Tail – Heckle, Flashabou and UV flash
Thread – Semperfli Floro Bright Orange / red
Eye – 4D epoxy eye
other – Epoxy
Picture step by step tying instruction:
Cut the foam as per measurement – 3cm x 3.5cm ( size 4 hook )
Cut the shape of the crease fly
double check the hook with the foam
Now, use a lighter… fused the foam together
Put in your hook and prepare the thread base
Wind in enough thread to create a hot spot ( about 1/4 of the shank ) also to push the body higher and as a good base for epoxy to hold the foam
Tie in the foam right after the hot spot
Bring a pair of heckle… tie it down … I like to tie the tail same length as the body
Tie in some flashabou
Get ready the splicing needle
Bring the needle thru the foam to collect the flashabou
Pull the flashabou out.. and trim the extra
Repeat the same… tie in the UV flash
Bring the needle thru the foam and lock on to the UV flash
Now bring the thread to about 1/4 shank length from the hook eye
Turn the vise over, fused the foam together
Tie down the foam
Drop some epoxy to the interior part of the fly ( to glue down the foam to the hook )
The epoxy is apply at the ‘belly’ or the bottom of the fly as weight..
Also apply some epoxy to the bottom part to secure the foam to hook
Drop a small drop of epoxy for the eye
Put on your desire 4D epoxy eye
Some Yusake Crease flies ready
Make sure your crease fly sit balance in the water… adjust it with adding epoxy to the base
Mouth full…..
Cheers and Happy Tying
